After finishing my Hakodate leg of my Hokkaido trip, I continued my journey to Sapporo. For those planning to take the JR train like I did, I'm sharing the reservation process and the most important seating tips.

On-Site Ticket Purchase at Hakodate Station

When you exit through the ticket gate at Hakodate Station, you'll see a red line marked on the floor to your left. Follow this line and it will lead you to the ticket office (Midori-no-madoguchi). Present your rail pass here and they'll assign you a seat.

Tip: The limited express train (Hokuto) from Hakodate to Sapporo operates with "all reserved seating"—there are no unreserved seats. I strongly recommend booking your ticket as soon as you arrive at the station. While online reservation is possible, I personally prefer the analog approach of holding a physical ticket in hand—it feels more like traveling and gives me peace of mind.

Comfortable Boarding and Luggage Storage

Boarding announcements begin approximately 20 minutes before departure. Since Hakodate is a terminal station, the train is already waiting at the platform. Don't delay—head to the platform as soon as the announcement is made. Boarding early allows you to comfortably store your luggage in the overhead compartments and settle into your seat with plenty of time before departure.

Seating Selection Pro Tips (Seat A vs Seat D)

The key to enjoying this train journey is the scenery.

  • Seat D (Highly Recommended!): On the right side in the direction of travel, you'll enjoy views of Uchiura Bay (ocean views).

Ocean view... envy seat D

  • Seat A: On the left side in the direction of travel, you'll see peaceful countryside and mountains. However, the views can be a bit monotonous. On the bright side, you might get lucky and have the seat next to you empty for a more spacious ride. In winter, with bulky coats, having an empty adjacent seat is definitely a plus.

If you want a romantic train journey with ocean views, secure Seat D at all costs! Seat D is popular for its views and sells out quickly, so if you've confirmed your itinerary, book as soon as possible.
